Concerns and frustrations over the abandoned Little Rock gas station are intensifying

Little Rock, Arkansas – Parts of Little Rock are seeing an increase in crime targeting vacant properties; one ancient structure in midtown has been boarded up, raising concerns.
People in the community and the city have stated that they want it removed.
An abandoned petrol station across the street from Park Plaza on Markham has been abandoned for more than a year and has been the subject of graffiti. According to the city, the structure is still unfinished even though the owner was meant to begin construction in May.
“It’s been a concern for our residents in our neighborhood, as well as surrounding neighborhoods as well,” said Briarwood Area Association member Dayna Gober.
Gober describes the building as an eyesore in addition to being a source of worry for the locals.
“You drive by [it] every day and it’s been dilapidated for over a year, maybe a couple of years now that we’ve been looking at it, and our residents are tired of seeing this,” she stated.
The fence is crumbling down, and the walls are boarded up and graffitied.
“We really just want to encourage people who own property, whether it’s a business or a resident, to keep it properly maintained to keep our city looking beautiful,” Gober stated.
Gober stated that she called the owner personally to try to get answers, but she did not receive a response, indicating that communication has been a major issue.
“We simply want a resolution since I know the city has been trying so hard to do so. It probably needs to be demolished now, in my opinion. Naturally, we would be thrilled to see a fantastic new construction for the midtown area,” she stated.
It’s unclear whether the plans to build a new Circle K gas station in the vicinity are still in the works.
“It is really regrettable. We thus hope that it will be resolved in the very near future so that we can either view a clean, empty lot or a new, lovely development in that area,” she stated.
According to the city’s manager of building codes, he instructed the permit staff to cancel the building permission on Friday and to stop submitting any more applications for permits for the location.
The city now intends to resume the condemnation procedure after waiting for several months for construction to begin.
