Jonesboro’s Juneteenth celebrations continue
Jonesboro, Arkansas – In Jonesboro, the day-long celebration of Juneteenth included a parade and a swim.
On Saturday, June 15, KLEK held the Juneteenth in Jonesboro Community Fair at Parker Park Community Center, following a colorful march through downtown.
Locals explored community services, purchased from a variety of local vendors, and benefited from free health checks provided by the New York Institute of Technology. The Kids Zone featured a huge Jenga, jumbo cup pong, and a bouncy house for the enjoyment of the kids.
The Juneteenth coordinator in Jonesboro, Allie Tabor, stressed the significance of the celebration in raising awareness outside of the neighborhood.
“It is important to recognize Juneteenth because it’s important to know your history,” Tabor said. “I learned a long time ago a person who doesn’t understand their past won’t have a future and I keep that in mind.”
The freshly opened Parker Park Swimming Pool had a pool party later in the day to continue the festivities outside.
On Wednesday, June 19, Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver will make an official proclamation and there will be a fireworks display. The event is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at University Lyons Park.
