Kroger in Morrilton set to close July 17th, community outraged

Morrilton, Arkansas – The Morrilton Kroger that has been open for years is set to close its store in July 17th the management confirms. Conway County residents had the chance to buy fresh organic foods for years at fair price.
Now the community is outraged as the management confirmed the store closure. But, it’s not only about the opportunity to buy groceries, it’s also about the employees. Customers were always happy to shop at Kroger for several reasons including the politeness of the employees there.
Tammy West, one of the store’s regular clients, says that closing the store will cause limiting her options where she can buy groceries daily. She says she chooses this particular grocery store because of its fair prices, quality produce and meats, and the friendly attitude of employees.
“I was in the hospital,” West remembered, “and the people at Kroger sent me cards! It’s a loss for all the counties around.”
Of course there is Walmart just on the other side of the street, but not many people are happy with shopping at Walmart and other big stores are on the other side of the town.
“Since Walmart went to self-checkout,” said local Joyce Macias, “we always go here. People feel like that self-checkout is putting people out of jobs.”
Kroger is closing the store because the space has been sold, but no other details were given. The mayor said that better and bigger things are coming, but we still wait to see what it will be, a local added.
In the meantime, “the mayor said shop local,” King said, “but there’s nowhere to shop that’s local besides Walmart. We don’t have a lot of local shops that sell clean produce.”
