Little Rock School District holds a meeting to address the topic of school closures and consolidations
Little Rock, Arkansas – Recently, the Little Rock School District (LRSD) proposed the possibility of closing certain schools within the district.
During a meeting held on Wednesday, parents and community members were given the opportunity to share their thoughts with the district.
The Centre at University Park was filled to capacity as parents and staff gathered to discuss the potential closures within LRSD.
The suggestions involve merging Carver Elementary with Washington Elementary, resulting in the new name: Carver-Washington Steam Magnet Elementary School.
Brady Elementary is set to close, with students being redistributed to McDermott, Pulaski Heights, Jefferson, Forest Park, JA Fair, and Stephens.
Amy Cooper, the Assistant Superintendent for LRSD, stated, “Washington’s building is larger, which allows for greater capacity for growth.”
During the meeting, LRSD Superintendent Jermall Wright provided insights regarding the timeline associated with the recommendations that were presented.
He acknowledged that although it seemed hurried, he erred by making a quick decision rather than allowing the community to provide input as initially intended.
“I urged the board to take action right at the last moment.” “That was a significant error on my part,” stated Superintendent Wright.
A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Washington Elementary. In a couple of weeks, on December 19, 2024, the school board is anticipated to cast their votes regarding these possible closures.
