More than 100 shots fired on a single night in Little Rock

Little Rock, Arkansas – More than 100 ShotSpotter activations were reported to the Little Rock Police Department on Wednesday evening.
The police report that the shootings took place between Wednesday night at 8 p.m. and Thursday morning at 3 a.m.
The first shots were fired close to the intersection of 13th Street and Washington Street.
Two shots were heard close to the junction of Lewis Street and West 12th Street, and a third shot was heard close to the intersection of Peyton Street and West 12th Street.
Later, according to police, shots were fired at South Harrison Street, West 31st Street, Lewis Street, and 23rd Street, prompting officers to arrive.
Police reported there were no injuries.
Officials from ShotSpotter claimed that their equipment detects gunfire in the locations where the city needs activators.
After the activator detects strong noises that might be gunshots, the device filters the sound to reduce its volume.
“Our people are very expert at distinguishing gunfire such that in the last year across our whole customer base, all the noises we heard, we only published out two percent as gunfire,” said Ron Teachman, director of public safety solutions at ShotSpotter. “Filtering out 98% of the noises, and not dispatching the police on what is not gunfire.”
ShotSpotter will assess whether or not the sound is a gunshot based on the sound’s wavelength.
ShotSpotter will warn first responders of the precise location if it is a gunshot.
