Since 1989, this famous Arkansas bakery has been providing desserts

Little Rock, Arkansas – The first Black-owned commercial bakery in Arkansas opened its doors in 1989 under the name Mickey’s Cakes and Sweets. Even if certain things have changed over the years, Mickey and her renowned recipes continue to be revered.

Mickey’s rapidly became known as a top bakery for special occasions like weddings and birthday cakes because of its unique recipe and method.

Over time, their menu grew to include favorites like brownies, cookies, and individual slices of their delectable cake.

Prior to buying the bakery from Mickey Young herself in 1997, Dorothy Coleman served as both the general manager and lead baker of Mickey’s.

Since then, she has created tens of thousands of cakes by hand for events ranging from birthdays and retirement celebrations to weddings and anniversaries.

Although Dorothy is still employed there, she sold the business to Jasmine Waters in December 2022.

Jasmine made Mrs. Dorothy’s continued employment a condition of her purchase of the venerable bakery.

Jasmine is proud to be a young Black businesswoman who now owns the restaurant with such a long history.

“Yes we are Black-owned, and that is a big deal for me as a young Black woman. However, Mickey’s is a family-oriented restaurant. Everybody here is family,” Waters said.

Mickey’s is available to everyone—special occasion planners included. Freshly made cookies, brownies, pies, and slices of cake are shown in their display case.

The “cake tort” is their top product. Consider this to be a deconstructed cake in a bowl. Hard to picture? So did we, as well. But go ahead and give it a shot.

Mickey’s is situated in the same Little Rock area where they have lived for many years at 11121 N Rodney Parham Rd, Suite 14A.
