Statement from Mayor Bart Castleberry on racial injustice

Conway, Arkansas – Statement from Mayor Bart Castleberry:

“The City of Conway would first like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. George Floyd. What happened in Minneapolis should be condemned. The image of a man’s life being taken while helpless, should be etched into the mind of our nation and speaks volumes as to how far our regard for human life has fallen. This repulsive behavior demonstrated by a law enforcement officer is inexcusable and it saddens me that Mr. Floyd’s life was senselessly cut short by this callous act.

As a city, we are actively committed to identifying and addressing the systemic racism that has led us to this point as a nation. We will not be complicit in the City of Conway, we will be vigilant and deliberate to ensure those in our community do not face discrimination or injustice in any form.

Our law enforcement officers, and all city departments have and will continue to undergo extensive diversity training so our city does not encounter the same tragedies that have taken black lives across our nation. We want our African American community to know they are seen, heard, respected, and safe. All of our citizens, no matter the color of their skin, should be treated with dignity and equality. We will continue to engage key community leaders in dialogue until that dialogue transforms into tangible action.

It is time for us to be agents of change. It is time for us to listen to our fellow brothers and sisters so that we can heal and unite. As we maneuver through these difficult, uncertain times, let us remember to make progressive strides to enact reformation and end systemic racism.

The City of Conway stands in solidarity with those who are peacefully protesting and advocating for change.”
