Little Rock, Arkansas – To improve bicycle and pedestrian safety on Arkansas roads, the Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office has launched a new campaign.

A new program named “Extreme Safety” has been unveiled by officials. It will run from September 3 to September 16. This will emphasize to drivers how important it is to keep an eye out for pedestrians, obey speed limits, and exercise caution when approaching crosswalks.

While pedestrians should utilize sidewalks, cross in authorized areas, and maintain awareness and alertness, cyclists should always wear helmets, check their brakes, and abide by traffic laws.

Colonel Mike Hagar, the secretary of public safety for Arkansas, stated, “Our goal is simple yet crucial — encourage motorists across the state to help protect the lives of pedestrians and cyclists who are often at a higher risk on our roads.” Together, we can avert needless tragedies and guarantee that everyone may drive safely in Arkansas by adhering to safety regulations and maintaining awareness.

With 82 unfortunate deaths, pedestrian fatalities in Arkansas hit a 10-year high in 2020. Black pedestrian fatalities were more than twice as high as those among White or Hispanic pedestrians, according to statistics from 2021.

In observance of National Pedestrian Safety Month, officials will launch a second related campaign, “Fourth Wall,” in addition to the “Extreme Safety” program, from October 7 through October 19. The emphasis of this campaign will be on shared responsibility and road safety for all users of the road.
